Debond day: getting braces off, and what comes next

The appointment everyone counts down to is short, slightly uncomfortable and ends with a strange, smooth mouth. It is also the day retention begins. Here is the visit and the week after.

Quick answer

Debond takes 45 to 60 minutes. Each bracket is squeezed with pliers so it pops off the glue, the remaining glue is polished from every tooth, and the teeth are scanned for retainers. It does not hurt; the squeezing feels like pressure and the polishing is noisy and a little sensitive. Retainers are fitted the same day or within a few days, and at the recommended clinic Vivera retainers are standard, with a bonded lower wire case by case. The teeth feel slick and slightly loose for a week, which is why retention begins straight away.

The appointment

  1. Minutes 0 to 15: removing the bracketsA special plier squeezes each bracket so the glue fractures at its base and the bracket lifts off. Pressure, a click, and a slightly loose feeling per tooth. Ceramic brackets take a little longer and more care. Molar bands are levered off.
  2. Minutes 15 to 35: removing the glueA slow-speed bur or polishing disc removes the residual composite from every tooth. Noisy, vibrating, occasionally sensitive on a tooth or two; not painful. The enamel underneath is unharmed.
  3. Minutes 35 to 45: recordsPhotographs, and a digital scan for retainers. Some clinics fit a same-day retainer from the scan; at the recommended clinic the scan for Vivera retainers is taken at or before debond and the set usually arrives within a week or two, with the final aligner or a temporary retainer worn in the meantime.
  4. Minutes 45 to 60: retention instructionsHow many hours to wear the retainers, how to clean them, what to do if one is lost, when to come back. Retention covers all of it.

What it feels like afterwards

  • The teeth feel slick, big and oddly smooth; the tongue keeps checking. Lips feel loose.
  • Teeth may be slightly sensitive to cold for a day or two.
  • Teeth feel very slightly mobile for the first week or two. This is normal, and the reason retention starts the day the retainers are fitted.
  • The gums may be a little puffy where brackets were; that settles within a week with normal brushing.
  • Eating: anything at all. Popcorn is traditional.

White marks and colour

Debond is when any white marks from plaque around the brackets become visible. They are permanent, though some fade slightly over months as the enamel rehydrates and remineralizes. Do not rush to whiten: the enamel needs a few weeks to settle, and whitening does not remove white marks (it can make them more obvious at first). Ask the orthodontist or your dentist about options if marks bother you; resin infiltration and microabrasion exist. Prevention during treatment is the only reliable answer, which is why brushing gets so much attention on this site.

The first week without braces

After debond
  • Retainers in as instructed from the day they are fitted — for some cases that is full-time at first, for others straight to nights.
  • Brush and floss normally; it takes half the time it used to. See your general dentist for a cleaning within a month or two.
  • Wait two to four weeks before any whitening, and ask first.
  • Expect a small adjustment if you play a wind instrument; the lip suddenly has room.
  • Take an after photo.
  • Book the retention checks before leaving; they are how a loose retainer or a drifting tooth is caught early.

Why this matters clinically

Teeth are at their least stable on debond day. The bone around them is immature, the gum fibres are stretched and the bite is still settling. The first weeks of retention set the long-term result, which is why retention begins straight away: a temporary retainer or the final aligner is worn from debond day until the Vivera set arrives.

Aligners: the last tray

The equivalent visit for aligner wearers is shorter: attachments are polished off (the same slow-speed bur), buttons removed, photographs taken and the retainer scan done. Many clinics have the patient wear the final aligner as a temporary retainer until the Vivera set arrives. The last-tray visit often follows a refinement check to confirm the plan is complete.

Questions people ask

Does getting braces off hurt?

No. It is pressure, clicking and noisy polishing. A tooth or two may be sensitive to the polish for a moment.

Can I eat anything right after debond?

Yes. Everything on the avoid list is back, once retainers are out for the meal.

When can I whiten my teeth after braces?

Wait a few weeks and ask. Whitening does not remove white marks and can highlight them initially.
