Vivera retainers: what they are, how they are worn and how they are replaced

Vivera is the clear retainer made by the manufacturer of Invisalign from a digital scan of your finished teeth, supplied as a set. It is the standard retainer at Guildford Orthodontic Centre for braces and aligner patients alike. Here is what that means in practice.

Quick answer

Vivera retainers are clear, removable retainers made from a digital scan and supplied as a set of several identical retainers per arch. They are thicker and more durable than a standard vacuum-formed retainer and, because the scan is stored, replacements can be made without a new impression. They are worn on the schedule your orthodontist sets, reducing over the years but never stopping; cleaned with cool water and a soft brush; and swapped for the next in the set when one wears out, cracks or is lost. At the recommended clinic they are the standard retainer and a bonded lower wire is added case by case.

How they are worn

  1. Debond, or the last alignerThe scan is taken. The set arrives within a week or two; the final aligner or a temporary retainer is worn meanwhile.
  2. The early phaseSome cases begin with full-time wear, out only for eating and brushing; others go straight to nights. Your orthodontist sets which.
  3. Then nightsEvery night. If a night is missed, the retainer feels tight the next night; two missed nights and it may be hard to seat.
  4. IndefinitelyOn the schedule your orthodontist sets, reduced over the years but never stopped, for as long as you want the teeth to stay put. Age-related drift never stops.
  5. ReplacingWhen a retainer clouds badly, cracks, warps or is lost, move to the next in the set. Keep the old one as a spare if it still fits. When the set is finished, the clinic reorders from the stored scan or rescans if teeth have changed.

Cleaning and care

Vivera care
  • Rinse when they come out; brush with a soft brush and cool water daily. No toothpaste.
  • No hot water, dishwashers, boiling or leaving them on a car dashboard: heat warps them.
  • Soak weekly in a retainer-cleaning tablet or a diluted vinegar solution; rinse well.
  • Case, always. Dogs and napkins are the two great destroyers of retainers.
  • Bring them to every dental and orthodontic visit.
  • Grinders: expect to wear through a retainer faster; the set is there for that.

Why a set

Retainers wear, crack and go missing, and a person without a retainer for two weeks in the first year can see visible movement. A set in the drawer turns a lost retainer from a problem into a non-event. It also removes the temptation to wear a cracked or ill-fitting retainer for months. If a set runs out, the stored scan allows a reorder, provided the teeth have not moved; if they have, a new scan is taken, which is also the moment to ask whether a short course of aligners is needed first.

Why this matters clinically

Retention only works if the retainer is worn and fits. The two common reasons it is not worn are that it is lost and that it is uncomfortable because it no longer fits. A durable retainer supplied as a set addresses both, which is the practical reason the recommended clinic standardized on it. No retainer, Vivera included, works in a drawer.

Questions people ask

Is Vivera the same as Invisalign?

Same manufacturer and manufacturing process, different purpose. Aligners move teeth and are worn 20-plus hours a day for a week or so each; Vivera retainers hold teeth and are worn nightly for years.

How many Vivera retainers are in a set?

Typically several per arch. Ask the recommended clinic what your fee includes and what a further set costs.

Can I get Vivera retainers if I had braces, not Invisalign?

Yes. They are made from a scan of the finished teeth regardless of how the teeth got there. At Guildford Orthodontic Centre they are the standard for both.
