About this guide

Clinical review policy

Every substantive guide is assigned to a named orthodontist, and the guide says whether that review has been completed. This page explains what the review checks and how it is recorded.

Who reviews

Guides are assigned by topic to Dr. Aly Kanani or Dr. Aida Mesbahi, both Certified Specialists in Orthodontics registered in British Columbia and both orthodontists at the recommended clinic. Their profiles are on the clinical reviewers page. Registration can be confirmed on the public register of the College of Oral Health Professionals of British Columbia.

What the reviewer checks

  • Clinical accuracy: mechanisms, timelines, wear-time standards, retention protocols, and the description of what each appliance can and cannot do.
  • Safety of self-help steps: everything a guide suggests doing at home (wax, salt-water rinses, tucking a wire, what to do about a lost aligner) is confirmed as safe general guidance, or removed, or flagged for a call to the clinic.
  • Calibration: that claims match the strength of the evidence cited, and that airway, sleep and early-treatment language stays within assessment-and-referral boundaries.
  • Clinic-specific facts: hours, consultation inclusions, appliances offered and retention protocol are checked against the recommended clinic's current practice.

How status is shown

The attribution block on each guide shows the assigned reviewer and one of two statements: "Review assigned; sign-off date will be shown here once complete" or "Clinically reviewed on [date]". The first stage of review — eleven guides covering the assessment, aligner and retention topics, plus the frequently asked questions — was signed off by Dr. Aly Kanani and Dr. Aida Mesbahi together on 21 September 2026, and those pages now carry a sign-off date. The remaining guides still carry the first statement, and the second is added page by page as sign-off is recorded. Guides are re-reviewed when materially revised, and at least every two years.

Conflicts of interest

The reviewers practise at the clinic this site recommends. To keep the guides useful regardless of provider, the review checks that guidance is stated generically, that load-bearing claims cite independent sources, and that the recommendation is confined to the single featured-provider block. Reviewers do not approve promotional language and have removed it from earlier versions of this site.
